Your Cosmetics are a Chemical Concoction of these 10 Toxins

Did you know that makeup companies are not required by the FDA to conduct thorough analysis of the health effects of their products' ingredients? That means a nasty concoction of toxic chemicals could be hiding in your cosmetics, and you wouldn't even't know it unless you pay attention.

There may be two reasons why you might be unaware of what your cosmetics are made of.

1) The toxic ingredients may be hidden under a vague title such as "Fragrance" (this ingredient is in EVERYTHING, and who knows what it contains as the manufacturer is not under an obligation to disclose it - the ingredients might even be protected under "trade secrets").

2) The ingredients are listed plain as day, but you don't know what they are or what they might do to your health.

We use our cosmetics everyday (or at least pretty often), and the skin is actually the largest organ in your body. Anything we put on our skin is ultimately absorbed into your body, as the skin is porous. It's called "transdermal" absorption. So it stands to reason that we should pay attention to the cosmetics and skincare products we put on our bodies, just as much as we pay attention to what types of foods we eat.

Bottom line is, if you eat organic, you should consider all-natural organic cosmetics and skincare as well, no matter the big companies' marketing may want to make you believe.

Here are 10 toxic chemicals that may be lurking in your cosmetics:
  • Phthalates (causes hormone disruption)
  • Lead (a neurotoxin linked to miscarriages and decreased fertility)
  • Quaternium-15 (a formaldehyde-releasing preservative, and known carcinogen)
  • PEG compounds (petroleum-based compounds, and known carcinogens)
  • Butylated compounds (BHT, BHA) (endocrine disruptors, causes skin allergies)
  • Parabens (interfere with hormone production)
  • Octinoxate (linked to endocrine disruption and thyroid issues)
  • p-Phenylenediamine (a respiratory toxicant)
  • Carbon black (linked to cancer and organic toxicity)
  • Siloxanes (endocrine disruptors and toxic to the reproductive system)
If you want to know what's in your cosmetics, the Environmental Working Group (EWG) provides a giant database to the public for this very purpose. Their site is called "Skin Deep." You can search over 74,000 products by typing product names into the search bar, or scanning barcodes with the app. If the product is in their database (and chances are, it is) EWG will score it based on its ingredients, and relative health concerns. It's an efficient way to sort through the cosmetics you'd like to continue to use, and the ones you'd like to toss.

Rawganique makes a curated selection of one-ingredient all-natural, all organic body care and skincare products. We select ingredients that are food-grade and that have been in use in many cultures around the world for hundreds of years, like 100% organic kaffir lime shampoo and 100% organic jasmine rice skin scrub, and 100% organic mungbean powder skin wash.
