The US is About to Legalize Hemp Farming!

Hemp is inspiring politicians to do the unthinkable: they’re agreeing with each other. The 2019 Farm Bill passed through the US Congress yesterday with support from both sides of the political aisle. If signed into law, the bill would finally legalize industrial hemp.

It’s been over 80 years since the last time hemp was legal in the US. The reason? Guilt by association. The Marijuana tax act prohibited hemp as a variety of the cannabis plant- even though it has none of the psychoactive effects of marijuana. In fact, hemp contains less than 0.3% THC, the chemical that gets smokers high. Marijuana can have 100 times more THC than hemp.

If it’s legalized, hemp can again become the plant of a thousand uses it once was. Farmers, including Thomas Jefferson and George Washington, grew hemp for rope and textiles. Today, even politicians who oppose legalized marijuana support the legalization of hemp, especially considering the revenue it could generate for farmers.

Hemp isn’t just versatile. It’s sustainable and healthy, too! It can grow in huge quantities with far less water consumption than cotton. Hempcrete gives us an eco-friendly building material. Hemp fiber is hypoallergenic, and we’re discovering more every day about the health benefits of CBD oil.

If you’ve visited our store, you’ve seen hemp in everything from socks to soap. We’re thrilled to see it on track to become a legal agricultural crop, and a $20 billion industry. It’s time for hemp to change the world.
